Arlene Elizabeth Clemesha

Professora Dra. de História Árabe do Curso de Árabe do Departamento de Letras Orientais da Universidade de São Paulo. Doutorado (2003) e Mestrado (1998) pelo programa de pós-graduação em História Econômica da Universidade de São Paulo. Pesquisadora Visitante na University of Michigan at Ann Arbor (2001). Seus livros incluem Marxismo e Judaísmo, história de uma relação difícil (São Paulo: Boitempo); Palestine 48-08 (Tehran: DEFC em farsi e inglês); Edward Said: trabalho intelectual e crítica social (co-org/SP: Casa Amarela); Brazil and the Middle East: the Power of Civil Society (co-org./IRI-USP), e possui textos publicados em inglês, espanhol, francês, italiano, árabe e farsi. Arlene atuou como tradutora de Edward Said ao português, incluindo o livro Freud e os Não-Europeus (Boitempo). Ela fundou e dirigiu a mostra de cinema Images from the East, em conjunto com o Documentary and Experimental Film Centre (Teerã) e o Instituto de Cultura Árabe. Atua como membro do Conselho Diretivo do Common Action Forum, sediado em Madri. Sua pesquisa está centrada na História árabe contemporânea, História da Palestina, e das relações Brasil-Países Árabes.
 

Arlene Clemesha (PhD) is professor of Contemporary Arab History at the University of São Paulo, Brazil, and her books include Marxism and Judaism, history of a difficult relation (São Paulo: Boitempo); Palestine 48-08 (Tehran: DEFC); Edward Said: intellectual work and social critique (Org. São Paulo: Casa Amarela); Brazil and the Middle East: the Power of Civil Society (co-org./IRI-USP). She has translated several of Edward Said’s articles and the book Freud and the Non-European  into Portuguese. Her writings have appeared in English, Portuguese, Spanish, French, Italian, Arabic and Farsi. Arlene was the Brazilian civil society representative to the United Nations International Network for Palestine (UN-ICNP) from 2005 to 2015. Also the founder and director of the film festival Images from the East, together with the Iranian Documentary and Experimental Film Centre, and the Brazilian Institute for Arab Culture. She is currently part of the Board of Directors of the Common Action Forum, based in Madrid.
